Beaches

There are many beautiful beaches around the coast of Tiree, all slightly different with their own beauty and treasures, all worth an explore.  Whether you fancy building castles, beach combing, long peaceful walks, nature spotting or water sports, Tiree has it all.  The nearest beaches to the Haven are Vaul (5 mins walk) and Gott (10 mins walk).  Also nearby are Salum, Ruaig and Caolas.  The water on this side of the island tends to be calmer, good for paddle boarding, kayaking, as well as windsurfing and kite surfing.  The beaches on to the west of the island tend to be more wavy and better for surfing.

Vaul Bay is five minutes walk from the Haven.  A lovely stretch of white sand, frequented by oyster catchers and other seabirds, with rocky outcrops at either end.  The sea here is often calm and good for kayaking and paddle boarding.  Seals can often be seen in the water or on the rocks, and if you're lucky you might spot one of the local otters.

Gott Bay is less than ten minutes walk from the Haven. A stunning four km of open white beach popular with wind surfers, kite surfers, walkers and runners.  Views of the mountains of Mull on the horizon.

Balevullin bay on the west of the island is popular with surfers and is home to Blackhouse watersports, where you can hire equipment or book lessons.

History

The Broch in Vaul  If you walk round the coast of Vaul to the west, you will find Dun Mor, the best example of a broch on Tiree and the only one to have been excavated.  Dun Mor was built in around 60AD as an emergency refuge, then inhabited for 200-300 years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dun_Mor_Vaul

Chapels in Kirkapol  Behind the lodge hotel in Kirkapol sit the ruins of two ancient chapels, dating back to the 14th century. The larger of the ruins is the former parish church and was dedicated to Saint Columba.  The larger chapel stands in its own graveyard and there are many ancient interesting burial stones still visible https://canmore.org.uk/site/21513/tiree-kirkapol-old-parish-church
